APPLIANCES

Grandmother kept calendars. They begin in 1965, the year before I was born. Or maybe she just didn=t save the ones before that. At first they=re AServiceMASTER of Denver@ calendars, with no pictures, only dull green borders I associate with 60s office files. Back then, she tracked the usual stuff any of us might write down.

January 3, 1965               Karen left 8:am Pat left 5:40

January 7, 1965               Mother & Marie S.L. - 8:40

January 17, 1965             Pat & Marie returned 2:-

January 24, 1965             Pat left for Fla 10:45

January 26, 1965             Dentist 11:15

January 27, 1965             Cords 10:30 Pat returned midnight

January 30, 1965             Virginia=s birthday

It=s a curious mix of the formal and informal. She notes herself as Marie, perhaps so Papa C APat@ C can follow the appointments, too. But then she writes AMother@ as if there=s no other but her own. By then, though, they probably already called Papa=s mother, Theresa, AMom Murray.@ We, her grandchildren, always called her Grandmother, because she said she hated the tacky sound of grandma, drawing out the ä like the baaing of a sheep.
